If the price goes from 2.95 to 2 cents then
A - 2.95
B - 0.02
AND
(0.02-2.95)/2.95*100 = 99.3% loss
100% of something is ALL of that something. Sure you can have a multi-thousand percent gains, triple your money and you've gained 300 percent.
However you can't lose more than the current price (there are no negatives) zero is zero. Therefore if the stock goes to zero it has lost 100% (or ALL) of it's value, there is no further it can go.
Think of it this way - if you could in fact lose 10,000% of your investment you'd lose 100 times MORE THAN the money you have! So if you've invested 500 dollars in a stock and you lose 10,000% you've lost 10,000% of 500 dollars which is 50,000 dollars!!!!! Wow I like my math better!
