US companies seeking access to Russia's gas reserves

RBC, 12.04.2005, Moscow 14:36:33.Russia should grant long-term access to its gas reserves to US companies instead of entering the US liquefied gas market, Alexander Vershbow, US ambassador to Russia, has stated today at the Russian-US workshop for liquefied gas market issues. The ambassador said that US companies were ready to invest in Russia's oil and gas industry, and provide their technology so as to have Russian gas on the US market. Vershbow observed that the US part was aware of the conditions required for liquefied gas supplies to US markets, and hoped for cooperation on the part of the Russian government.

He also reported that recently, the opportunity for liquefied gas deliveries to the US has emerged on the market, and in case Russia misses it, the next chance may take a long time to appear. He observed that meetings between US secretary of commerce Carlos Guterres and energy secretary Sam Bodman, and Russia's industry and energy minister Viktor Khristenko and economy minister German Gref were scheduled for the near future.
