It's easy to protect oneself. Stick mostly with NYSE stocks and never buy OTCBB/Pink pennies. If you have to buy small caps, only buy those with top 20 national auditors. Outright frauds on the NYSE have proven to be extremely rare. (yes, I know about Enron and Arthur Andersen)
