Your analogy is almost spot on!

I have spent many years in the printer business in some sort or fashion, from sales to coding for print systems.

HP builds entry level print systems and sells them at cost, the more expensive the system the less the price per page to print. I.E. $50 printer $1+ per page full color, $2,000 printer $0.30+ per page full color. But Kia Sara Mita $4,000+ laser color printer is only $0.07 per page full color and they provide all toner and charge for the print count at the .07 color and .02 for black and white.

So to get back on trace here, if I was HP I would be freaking out if someone was going to supply consumables for a product I did all the R&D on in order to make my money on consumables! Just to be way undersold.
