To my mind one of the failings of the US education system is the naive belief that everyone should go to college. Far better to emulate Germany and have a parallel strong technical/trade education system.
I have a sister-in-law that teaches at an inner-city school in LA. They get kids that are barely literate in their native Spanish, let alone English, and plunk them into algebra classes (even though they can barely do any arithmetic) and Shakespeare classes and then fudge the results so it looks like they are passing. It's like something from The Onion except its true.
