The main thing, sorry if it has already been stated, is that the NHL isn't going after those "purist" fans. They already have them and they are not going to dislike or stop watching the NHL because of some drawings or comics.
The NHL is trying to expand their market to a younger generation so they can grow up liking hockey and have kids that will then be connected by default. Just like I grew up liking Giants Baseball because my Dad exposed me to it from a very early age. It is a very well thought out plan and I hope it works.
