GM sales in China exceed those in the U.S.
DETROIT - For the first time in its history, the automaker General Motors sold more vehicles in China that in the United States last year.
The Detroit giant has sold about 2.35 million cars and trucks in the Middle Kingdom in 2010. It's more than 136,000 U.S. territory.
The number of vehicles sold by GM in China jumped 29 percent, compared to 6.3 percent in the United States.
Globally, the growth of GM's sales amounted to 12 percent.
Despite these spectacular gains, the U.S. company failed to wrest from his Toyota as the biggest carmaker in the world.
The Japanese company has indeed sold 8.42 million vehicles last year, or 30,000 more than GM.
The U.S. giant expected to continue growing in 2011, partly thanks to vans that are particularly popular with SMEs. The latter will again invest after two years to tighten their belts.
The company also announced Monday that it added a shift at its truck plant in Flint, Mich., to meet demand. This will cause the recall of 650 employees.
Industry analysts believe the company could regain the top spot to Toyota this year. The Japanese manufacturer has this rank since 2008. He had previously been owned by GM.
