Only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask I guess.
MMs are Market Makers, the are companies or individuals who perpetuate the trading of stocks. When you add a bid to buy they will sell you stocks, when you ask to sell they will buy. Each of the actions they take they are looking to make a profit.
The problem arises when they take actions to manipulate prices in their favour. If you check back in the recent weeks post someone addeda very nice article about some of the "shady" practices that some MMs take both individually and collectively.
