China to build super high-voltage power grid

China says it will begin construction of a super high-voltage power grid before June this year, in an effort to improve efficiency in nationwide electricity transmission.

Luan Jun is an official with the State Grid Corporation.

He says by 2020, the super high-voltage power grid will become the major electrical network covering all large power stations in China.

At present, most of the electricity transmission systems in China are 500,000 volts, with only a small capacity for electricity transmission.

Luan Jun says the low efficiency in electricity transmission is the major reason for building a new power grid.

"The economically strong region in east or central China is at least one thousand kilometers away from the resource-rich region in west or north China. The present power grid of 500,000 volts is far from efficient enough to transmit enough electricity from west or north China to eas or central China."

The new power grid China is to build will be over one million volts, with the electricity transmission capacity five or six times of the current one.

Experts predict, after its completion of the new power grid, it will save electricity up to above 100 billion kilowatts per hour.

Meanwhile, the existing electricity netorks will be reconstructed in the coming years to ease the severe power shortage that China is facing at the moment.
