However, I don't expect AMD is sitting around doing nothing. They still have a significant lead to build on as far as I can tell.

Significant lead in what? Adoration in the damp eyes of their
partisan fan base? Being flavour of the month among rabid
gamers? It certainly isn't in sales, margins, profitability,
technology, OEM relationships, mind share, branding or
anywhere else that counts on a business rather than religious
level.
