Volume is the main cause of confirmation to a TA trend. With out increased volume most indicators fade away. With a stock that is not being manipulated, mostly news starts a run or financials create a climb until traders feel enough is enough.

But in all cases volume is the key. Once it starts, momentum carries it on until something stops it.

My claim is MM stop the run with penny stocks because the market isn't transparent. The orders go to the market maker and the market maker places them on the exchanges.

So they know the demand before releasing it and can hold orders to keep traders opinions from reaching eyes until they want. Within reason. If volume is low they can hold longer, if the volume is strong, they have to let go sooner, they manipulate but can't cancel.

Some say I'm full of bull and I may be. They say how can one MM control a stock that has 20 MMs. They don't see each others order books. This is correct, but I've seen and documented MM signaling other MMs with order size and order placement tricks.

If you follow the tic by tic and the PPs seems to be climbing and all of a sudden you see an under 1k trade at the bid on a stock that has been trading in the 10's of thousands all day, IMO that is a MM saying to others, I see a lot of ask orders. If a few minutes later you see another under 1k trade at the bid, that is a yes, I do to replay. The next thing will be a hold on trades, after a trade every minute or two, the trades will stop or slow for 10, 15, 30 minutes. Followed with several trades at the bid, Usually large, in an attempt to make traders think buying interest has stopped and it's time to sell.

All this is illegal and could never happen because MMs are there to make an even flow in a market, per their doctrine.
But I called this on Gtel so many times in 2004 it was funny to RB board members.

I have a post from a retired MM that tells some of the tricks MMs do. If I can find it I'll post it here.
