Will I think you are missing the point. It's not how much we consume nor produce. It's rather the demographics of how many are net producers and how many people are net consumers. A school age child is a net consumer as well as a retiree. The stats show that the average person is their most productive at 46-47 years of age. Demographics show that the largest concentration of our population in that age group would hit between 1996 and 2004. After that our country a net loss of producers as the boomers retire and become net consumers.

Anway, I just reread your post. Who is "Abbott and Costello"?
You wrote, "demand is desire backed up by the ability to pay".
Oh, really. The demand from the elderly for health care will increase sunstantially when the boomers retire. If these folks do not have the ability to pay for health care does that mean the demand won't be there. That's absurd.
