As someone who has undergone a few of these, my hatred of the procedure is the preparation. It seems the capsule endoscopy does not avoid that. In that regard, it seems similar to the "virtual colonoscopy," which to my mind suffers from the defect that you have undergo the vile preparation but subject yourself to the possibility that they find a polyp, in which case, with a standard colonscopy, they can remove it, whereas with the virtual colonoscopy or capsule endoscopy, you would have to repeat the prep and undergo a procedure to remove the polyp. So for that reason, I have always chosen the standard colonoscopy and have had a couple of polyps removed.
Also, I see from the website that in 2% of the procedures, the capsule gets stuck for more than 2 weeks, and has to be retrieved by some means or another.
Perhaps my attitude is symptomatic of the problems with American medicine, which is, my decision is not based on cost at all. But I'm not sure I would choose differently even if there were a moderate incremental cost to me for the standard colonoscopy
