I do think Girlfriend will find an audience, and could become a critical darling and gain a lot of attention in the media forthe novelty of having a real autistic person playing a lead role, but to compare it to Twelve is a bit off-base I would think. Never know. I may be wrong. But the few succesful movies that have been made on this subject have featured big name actors. Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. Sean Penn in I Am Sam. Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. And all those movies featured the comedic element.
As Robert Downey said to Ben Stiller in Tropic Thunder, the problem may be in going "full retard" .
