I am afraid it will not be that easy. If, as I hope, the newly elected conservatives are able to cut out much of the bloated spending which permeates our government today, the immediate result will mean pain for a lot of folks. Reducing spending is necessarily restrictive on the economy as a whole, and to that will be added the large numbers of excess government employment that will have to be trimmed. The economy will slow, and there will be a lot of newly unemployed folks, many of them union. There will be plenty of pain to spread around and most will want that pain to be borne by "the other guy".
I have serious doubts that the American people have the backbone to do what must be done. The unions, for sure, will be screaming bloody murder -- if not, then enough is not being done.
We shall see.
