krays: When it says the URL is formed, it is indicating the application assembles the URL locally. This is still indirect. "[The present invention] resolves the data into a URL in one of several ways, depending on the application (to be described later)."

In this patent, one of the methods is the local app converts the indirect into a "request" URL to identify the clearinghouse, and location within the clearinghouse. The clearinghouse then swaps that into a "information" URL. Managed indirect has the information URL encoded.

This takes proprietary to a new level and is certainly not the direction Laura outlined. This may also have some problems with prior art since their is a local database.
