How can I trust ANY information that is provided anymore?

The only thing you can do is ALWAYS try to confirm all information. Approach every penny stock as if it's a "what's wrong with this picture" puzzle. ASSUME there's something wrong, and go looking for it.

If after a lot of work you can't find it, then you just may have hit one of the very few good ones.
