BPA applauds EPA decision to postpone boiler MACT ruling
By Biomass Power Association | December 09, 2010

BPA says the EPA’s decision to postpone the boiler MACT ruling will save thousands of jobs and provide support for the U.S. renewable energy sector.

...The Biomass Power Association applauds the U.S. EPA for extending the deadline for decision on the re-proposed boiler MACT ruling. This delay will allow the EPA to thoroughly assess the potential effects of this rule across America, from both an environmental and an economic perspective.

“On behalf of the industry, I would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Senator Susan Collins for her leadership and hard work advocating on behalf of biomass,” said Biomass Power Association president and CEO Bob Cleaves. “The EPA is listening, and we at BPA are hopeful that the agency will make the right decision, which could save thousands of American jobs and provide strong support for the American renewable energy sector.”

The boiler MACT rule is intended to limit the emissions of five hazardous air pollutants for industrial, commercial and institutional incinerators, boilers and process heaters, including those using biomass. As it is currently written, the rule does not consider the science behind biomass emissions and would wrongly categorize many multi-fuel boilers as incinerators.

Biomass power is a $1 billion renewable energy industry with 80 facilities in 20 states and provides over 14,000 jobs nationwide. Biomass utilizes wood waste materials—paper and furniture industry byproducts and forest floor debris, for example—as fuel for clean energy. Power plants are predominately located in rural communities, creating thousands of jobs and producing millions in revenue for small towns. Biomass power is a clean and abundant source of electricity that will allow states to pursue even more aggressive goals for increasing their use of renewable energy in the future.
