FireFox,

Ok, let's take it a step further. From the PR:

"These data are particularly encouraging and relevant to our future planned clinical studies in HCV as we near completion of enrollment in our Phase Ib trial in patients coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV." and,

"In multiple VHF experiments, animals treated with bavituximab in combination with ribavirin demonstrated up to 50% greater survival than animals treated with either bavituximab or ribavirin alone, suggesting a potential synergistic therapeutic effect.

So, let's take a look at HCV SOC. Current SOC is ribavirin plus pegylated interferon. Of course, this treatment is severely limited by the horrendous side effects cause by Peg interferon. It's nasty stuff. You can read up on it here at:

http://www.hcvadvocate.org/hcsp/articles/current_standards_2006.html

In the future, SOC is expected to migrate to SOC plus Vertex's telaprevir.

"The HCV standard of care (SOC), ribavirin plus pegylated interferon, often comes under fire for its 40 percent to 50 percent cure rate and significant side effects.

In Vertex's Phase III trial, 75 percent of patients achieved a cure, or sustained viral response (SVR), after receiving 12 weeks of telaprevir plus SOC followed by SOC alone, compared to just 44 percent of patients receiving only SOC (p < 0.0001).
"

However, even though we'll hopefully be moving from 50% SVR to 75% SVR, the horrible side effects from Peg interferon will remain part of the SOC equation.

Ok, so let's track back to the VHF studies. Bavi plus Ribavirin improves suvivability in VHF's by up to 50%. So, the two have an additive effect. So, here's the question. Can Bavi replace Peg interferon in the SOC cocktail (Ribavirin plus Peg interferon and then Ribavirin plus Peg Interferon plus Telaprevir) and be more effective? Or, at least "as effective". All PPHM would have to do would be to show comparable results as a Peg Interferon replacement. Reduction of adverse side effects would be huge.

Disclosure before the attack:

1. As much as I like the scenario, I can't claim it. I've been schooled by a much more prescient individual.
2. This is for "down the road" and it'd involve a partner, but it illustrates the "platform" thinking with bavi.

Regards,

WH
