Michael Cowpland worked for Bell Northern Research (later part of Nortel Networks) and then MicroSystems International.

After an apprenticeship at British Telecom's research lab at Martlesham Heath, Terry Matthews left the UK and joined MicroSystems International, a chipmaking operation affiliated with Northern Telecom (now Nortel Networks) in Ottawa, Canada.

You'll note they had a solid tech background, not sales and showmanship like Val.
