The nitrogen in the soil can be an environmental hazard. One thing that it can create is nitric acid (HNO3)which is not a good thing. The chemicals that are in fertilizer CAN be toxic. If they remain in place or are absorbed by plants, than they are much less harmful. Runoff is the danger. That is why an irrigation (water system) like Itro is designed for is far superior.
