Base metals - unleashing growth
Vale is accelerating the implementation of highly competitive projects to take advantage of its privileged postition due to the availability of multiple attractive growth options in base metals.

Persuant to a commitment with the Government of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Vale is building a nickel processing facility, the Long-Harbor plant. It will have a nominal production capacity of 50,000 tpy of finished nickel, utilizing the feed from the Ovoid mine of our Voisey Bay site. The total estimated capex is US$ 2.821 billion and start-up is scheduled for 1H13. Capex budgeted for 2011 is US$ 817 million as the project enters into the more intensive capital expenditure phase.

CONTRACT TALKS BETWEEN VALE AND USW AT VOISEY’S BAY END WITH NO DEAL

July 20, 2010 – Vale expressed its disappointment today that contract talks with United Steelworkers (USW) Local 9508, representing some 130 striking mine and mill employees at the company's operations in Voisey's Bay, have ended with little progress towards a new collective agreement.
"We are very frustrated and extremely disappointed,” said Tom Paddon, General Manager of Vale's operations in Newfoundland and Labrador. "It is clear that the USW's bargaining committee is not fully committed to finding a pathway to a new collective agreement. From the outset, we have been fully prepared to engage in collective bargaining, however, it takes the commitment and willingness of both parties to discuss all issues and work towards finding common ground."

"We will continue to move forward with our operations at Voisey's Bay."
