That's something I'm trying to get a read on for future plays, and 100% certain it will never be truly figured out unless true free market forces exist at the plays < $1.00.
In a nut, shorting is how MM's can control stocks for their own benefit for the most part. I'm now seeing how they trade to accumlate at low levels...then allow a run up to catch short run profits on the way up. On those rare occasions, like MOBL, NEOM, SIRI, NWAU, ALMI, GTEL and the like do certain companies simply have too strong fundementals for them to try to play games. As for SPEA, many influencial backers were involved behind the scenes, so again it's not one MM's were allowed to have their way. Mr. Meheu's involvement with CMKX may be the force needed to network important backing for a similar opportunity as time passes.
Being aware of it and trying to detect patterns and opportunities is the thing.
All in my opinion, but certainly what I'm seeing over 1 1/2 years looking at this.
