If they can dismiss them from representing themselves, they may have to pay outside counsel. That's the logic I see. I would still prefer a resolution than moving venues or the possible delays they could be granted by bringing in new counsel and getting them up to speed. I'm hoping they are trying to resolve through mediation or other settlement, but conducting these other actions as backup and/or a further enticement to resolve this thing sooner than later.
