Ubuntu is the probably best Linux desktop going. I just installed it on a friends Windows laptop. The Ubuntu install process will handle setting up a dual boot setup with an existing Windows system very easily so there's no need to go all or nothing with Linux. You should consider giving the dual-boot a shot!
