OFF Alert 3/5/01

Last week was "gun bill blow out" week in Salem with a slew of new
bills. Some of them are copies or slight variations of existing
legislation, some are new.

Representative Betsy Close has been busy introducing numerous good gun
bills.

To view any of these bills, please use the following url:
<http://www.leg.state.or.us/01reg/measures/main.html>

HB 3121. This is another bill that will recognize other states handgun
permits.

HB 3148. Sponsored by Kurt Schrader, who was a supporter of 1999's
attack on gun show freedoms, this bill establishes a tax credit for the
purchase of a "safe storage device." Note that one of the co-sponsors of
this bill is anti-gun zealot Ginny Burdick. Maximum you can deduct
$250.00

HB 3116 Another tax credit for a "safe storage device" sponsored by
Betsy Close, this one allows deductions up to $3000.00

HB 3249. This is another bill like SB 508 that gives a school board
the right to bar CHL holders from schools.

HB 3117. Another good bill by Betsy Close, this requires a destruction
of background check records after 90 days.

HB 3118. Betsy Close again, this would eliminate background checks for
CHL holders.

HB 3129. This bill creates "civil immunity" if someone uses your gun to
hurt someone else.

SB 923. This bill, which actually got introduced on Feb. 26th, is the
attack on gun owners that Burdick has been promising since the passage
of measure 5. It's a "no guns in schools" bill but it's actually worse
than the others that have been introduced. The others just give school
boards the option of banning chl's. This bill makes it mandatory.

Two other recently introduced bills that are not related to guns but
might be of interest are:

SJR 12. This would make annual sessions of the legislature. Currently
Oregon's legislature only meets every two years. We think this
legislation should be called the "Politician and Lobbyist Full
employment act. It's a bad idea.

Another bad idea is SB 560. This bill would eliminate the tax credit
that you can currently take for contributions to OFFPAC.

We will keep you informed if any of these bills start to move.

IMHO; This Is A Really Great Group!
