It is definitly a delivery system. The advantages are a constant release system which is designed to deliver the medication in a time release form. There are other forms of time release, and the most widely used are tablets or capsules which depend upon the disintergration by the stomach acids prior to absorbion into the blood stream. If my memory is correct, Nitroglycerin (Nitro-Dur)was one of the first to be introduced and has been widely used for many years. A few others such as Fentanyl, Lidocaine. and scopolamine are still in wide use today. They can be designed to either concentrate the drug to a specific area or be absorbed into the blood stream. A far less invasive system than injection.
