Re: The more obvious advantage is x86 compatibility.
Yes an obvious oversight on my part.

Re: If Opteron has no market presence, why would you expect the end user to demand it?
I think there may be end user demand

"NVIDIA would love to move away from these costly Sun boxes altogether and transition to a much more affordable x86-linux platform, but the problem is finding a 64-bit x86 solution. NVIDIA is currently evaluating Intel's Itanium for use in their farm but as far as their needs go, AMD's Opteron would be a gift from God. NVIDIA is eagerly awaiting the launch of Opteron so that their dreams may be fulfilled with an affordable x86 solution that offers 64-bit memory addressability; until then, they'll have to stick with these million-dollar sun systems."

I believe Google was showing strong interest in Hammer also, but I can't find the link.

There was also reference in the below link to demand for Hammer.

Re: HPQ is more likely to go with AMD
I don't know about this
"HP, of Palo Alto, Calif., which co-developed Itanium, said it has no plans to use AMD's 64-bit chips."

I emailed the author of this story and asked him who at HP said this here is his reply:

Peter Blackmore, Executive Vice President, Enterprise Systems Group,
made the statement during a one-on-one interview last month at HP World
in LA.

Subject: Newisys to Use 64-Bit AMD Chip in Servers

Ken, do you know the name and position of the HP rep who said "it has no

plans to use AMD's 64-bit chips"?
Thanks

I don't think HPQ will be adopting Hammer anytime soon. They have no need to.

Re: People leave their respective companies routinely to create new startups.
Yes but the question is do high ranking executives leave there jobs to create startups whose sole purpose is sell AMD servers?
I don't think so, these guys are not fools they knew what they were getting into before they left. Basically taking on Intel, why would they do that? I think they know something. Either they left knowing there was going to be a high probability of their respective companies adopting Hammer or they know that they can survie with just Tier-2, and lower guys using there products. Either case they felt Hammer was/is going to be successfull in the server market.

Hey what do you think about what Pravin says here:
