What we have learned from an actual deployment
In late 2006, we installed a thermal camera system in a remote section of the US/Mexico border. In the 40 months of continuous "24/7" operation, the camera system has enabled the apprehension of well over one hundred persons suspected of illegal activity.

Experience gained over this time enables us to identify a set of key learning's and to make some informed judgments about how to further attack the overall objective. This experience comes from operational experience with the hardware, from discussions with local law enforcement individuals about the use of the system and from the simple empirical act of watching what happened. From a technology and hardware perspective, we were struck by how dark it can actually be yet how effective the thermal camera technology is at countering the darkness. This drives us to the conclusions a) that thermal cameras need to be used pervasively as surveillance tools, and b) that agents need personal night vision gear for that part of their jobs where they must move through fields and brush on foot in this intense darkness.
