It's safe, the hot areas there have been thoroughly delineated, especially in the public tour areas. As of my last time out there, there hadn't been a case of personal contamination for something like 13 years. The main entry gate also has a radiation porthole that you can't get much of anything through. It actually detected a guy I worked with that had been through a thallium stress tests a few weeks earlier. The silly guy didn't think to mention that until the security guards had practically turned us all inside out surveying everything in our possession. Yes security is tight there, so leave all your fun stuff at home.

But the sights you'll see there are powerful reminders of just how much devastation those weapons can reap on this earth. Some people think Hoover Dam is a man-made wonder of the world, but I think it's even more gripping to see just how destructive we can be too.

The zen book "Warm Smiles From Cold Mountains" has a good stream of consciousness from the author Tenshin Reb Anderson based on his experience taking the tour of The Nevada Test Site....it's thought provoking stuff...and something not a lot of people get to see.
