Sun's Xeon systems launched in 2003. Obviously, they are going to be uncompetitive by today's standards. Sun's strategy is erratic and inconsistent. They want to use Opteron to stick it to Intel, but they want UltraSparc to survive, too, with massively multithreaded designs. Their divergent approach won't work very well. In another three years, I see UltraSparc becoming insignificant, and Sun will be back to using Xeons (in addition to Opteron).
