You don't know what they were thinking - we can all read the Constitution and interpret it differently. Who is to say which interpretation is right - and who is to say that the Founding Fathers themselves interpreted it in same way.

And we do that by electing the officials who will abide by the Constitution.

Yeah right. <G>

That is the fault of the American people if they choose to elecct candidates who don't abide by the Constitution. What are you going to do - take away their right to vote (maybe I should call you Ann Coulter <g>)
