Adam: While I recognize that no entity could be considered completely independent or unbiased, both Gartner and Mercury make their living on the premise that they *are* independent and unbiased. Furthermore, they have no close ties to either Intel or AMD, and they have essentially nothing at stake when either company takes or loses market share.

Though they may not be completely independent or unbiased, I certainly trust their assessment of market share more than the assessments of either Intel of AMD. Both will try to spin things their own way, and both have made misleading statements about market share in the past.
