Check out the film, "Who killed the Electric Car"? An excellent, fascinating, & relevant film to answer your questions.

The short version is too unbelievable to tell but some of you may remember the Volt. A GM product (i think) that was doing over 70-100miles per charge & became beloved. BUT, oil companies, dealers, the combustion industry with its parts/supply chain & other money interests made sure to eventually bury the car & the technology. Not enough people making money on the "system" and too many people already in business would lose out.

Enjoy it!! It is a great film.
