Woman recovering from 'BlackBerry thumb' surgery
By JANIE PORTER • WTSP-TV, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Fla. • August 26, 2010

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A mortgage banker who says she spends 12 hours a day texting clients is recovering from thumb surgery.

The hospital says her condition is best known as "BlackBerry thumb," even though she was using an iPhone. Symptoms include pain, inflammation, numbness and tingling.

"I'm texted out," the woman from the Philadelphia area said.

Some people can type 40 words a minute on their BlackBerrys, and that puts a lot of strain on a digit not known for its dexterity, according to WebMD.

The constant texting created so much pressure that the tendons in her thumb became inflamed. She had to undergo surgery to remove the tendons.

Doctors say if you start feeling pain during texting, stop. Don't try to power through it.

The mortgage banker says she is eager to get back to work. But for now, she's typing with the hunt-and-peck method and trying to give her BlackBerry thumb a break.
