That statement is incorrect, I'm afraid.

While it would take a lot of work and time and money, the republicans wishes to remove FNM/FRE and replace them with a group of small privatized companies is possible. The mortgages would be safe, just transfered to a new holder.

As for what the previous poster said about "The republicans not getting their way.", my opinion is that the reason the republicans are not getting their way here is because it isn't a good idea! The economic failure was not FNM/FRE's fault. They did what they were supposed to be doing. The restructuring should be focused on the banks (where the problem started) and not on the secondary mortgage market.

Given time, FNM/FRE WILL recover (its not even a matter of if, but when). My own opinion, republicans are using this issue to cause doubt over Obama's administration so that they can try to take power in the next elections....and unfortunately, it might work since the average American only sees what is in front of their face and not the big picture.
