(Aug. 17--RICHLAND -- The check has arrived to pay for the main work phase on the largest and most comprehensive project in the nation to demonstrate how the electric grid can be used more efficiently and be made more reliable. http://www.istockanalyst.com/article/viewiStockNews/articleid/4414050

"The work being done here makes Washington state a leader in smart grid technology," said Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., during a visit to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland on Monday. The Department of Energy \l "" lab is operated by Battelle, which is managing the Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Project.
"With funding for this landmark smart grid demonstration project now moving ahead, our region is cementing its leadership in what will be a worldwide smart grid marketplace worth hundreds of billions of dollars," Cantwell said.
The $178 million project will demonstrate and test smart grid projects at 11 Northwest utilities, including the Benton Public Utility District. The Department of Energy has released $45 million to move the demonstration project from the planning to actual work, such as installing equipment.
Federal economic stimulus money is being matched by money from the utilities.
The project will create 1,500 jobs at its peak, including about 500 in Washington, Cantwell said.

Battelle has licensed technology developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory that will help electric car drivers charge their rides at times of lowest cost and stress on the electric grid as smart grid capabilities become more available.
ZAP, a California car maker, will market Smart Charger Controller technology in the United States, Korea and, through a joint venture, China.
Owners of electric cars can set the time they want the battery to be fully charged. Technology that relies on low-range wireless will communicate with the power grid, if a local utility has that communication function available, and determine the best time to recharge vehicles.
