Mining, drilling, or farming are a slow drawn out process requiring unknown time prior before the flow of wealth can begin. Afganistan might have over two trillion barrels of oil in the ground meaning a fortune in assets. But at what cost, how many lives, and how many years before the Beverly Hill-Billies arrive and move in next door?
