BP will wrap up its emergency response efforts to the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill in Florida as early as the end of the month, officials with the oil giant and the federal government told Panhandle residents this week, and begin long-term restoration efforts.
The bulk of the remaining recovery efforts in Florida will be focused on beach cleanup and will represent a skeleton crew compared to the thousands of beach cleanup laborers and boat captains who spent nearly two months receiving paychecks to aid with the disaster response.
The transition from emergency response to restoration shifts responsibility for the disaster from Unified Command, now run by BP and the U.S. Coast Guard, to the Gulf Coast Restoration Organization, headed by BP executive Bob Dudley.
BP officials insist they remain committed to completing the cleanup as promised as they begin what they call "rightsizing" operations.
"We're not putting any time frame on it. We are going to be in the response mode as long as we need to be in the response mode," BP spokesman Phil Cochrane said in a telephone interview Thursday.
