The algae cultures get light inhibited if its culture density is low when inoculated in a photo-bioreactor. It seems that they inoculated with low density culture and put a shade to prevent light-inhibition (which occurs at 20 to 40% of Southern California sun irradiation at noon in August).
It seems that they are doing the right thing. They will wait for the culture to get more cell density, and once it is darker (like dark beer for this particular strain), a self shading effect in which external cells will shade the internal ones will occur and constant production will be achieved. From here they would inoculate larger scale PBRs.
Let's wait and see what happens.
Cheers,
