"Sprint spokeswoman Stephanie Greenwood said the company’s involvement is limited to selling GeckoSystems mobile broadband connection cards to provide the wireless signals for the CareBot’s onboard camera and video-conferencing capabilities.
But she said it’s similar to what other companies in the “machine-to-machine” (M2M) space are doing to use wireless for things other than phone calls, such as mobile tracking systems for people with Alzheimer’s disease and digital signs in hospitals that can be updated with emergency information. It’s considered a key source of growth for Sprint as the pool of potential cell phone customers continues to shrink and wireless carriers search for new markets.
“We are seeing many new and creative solutions like this emerging in the M2M space,” she said.
