You can claim it as a worthless security and take the loss (technically, you need a letter from your broker indicating "no bid"). If the shares then ever come back to life (once in a blue moon this might happen) your basis would be 0 going forward.

Or--ask your broker to do a "courtesy sale" for you. Sometimes they will "sell" (actually remove the shares from your account) for just a commission or partial commission. In this case you have an actual transaction to support the claimed loss.

Unfortunately I have had some experience with this :(

If I could afford to buy all of them, I would not need to buy any of them and I sure wouldn't be spending time on the message boards!
