A little strange: "We gave thalidomide to thousands of pregnant women before we understood that this was causing birth defects." No "we" didn't, unless "we" is understood to refer to a group of Europeans or other non-U. S. medical practitioners; and wasn't it more like hundreds than thousands? When hyperbole and/or misstatement are used in this way, it undermines any attempted air of seriousness in the discourse.
