Moral of the story... don't always believe what the docs say.

When my grandfather was a young man he came out to Nevada (from NY) and went to work for the electric company. His job was putting up poles for the power lines. One day, one of the poles fell and crushed all the muscles in one of his legs. The docs told him that he would never walk again. However, the doctor from his home town in NY had retired in Redlands, CA. That doctor took my grandfather into his home and began physical therapy. For a year he helped my grandfather until he could walk again. For years he walked with a cane, but eventually you wouldn't have even known there had been an accident. He went back to work for the electric company and eventually worked his way up to head of Tax Dept. A few years before he retired, he was offered the job of Treasurer but turned it down because it meant relocating.

True story about my grandfather.
