The spills in the Niger Delta are mainly caused by people tapping into the pipelines and trying to steal oil. And once there is a leak it is too dangerous to go in and fix it because the Nigerian insurgents will kill you or kidnap you.

Another cause of the leaks was people blowing up the pipelines and the other oil and gas facilities. You'd be surprised at how much a blown up pipeline will leak.

One more major cause of the leaks is that the oil companies are forced to hire the indigenous companies and people and use local materials as well. This results in shoddy workmanship that falls apart in just a few years.

The final cause for leaks is the local and national government in those countries. They don't give a damn about the local people, the environment or anything else. They never have and never will.

All of these are reasons I don't want to see ERHE participate in anything in this area. You can sit there and blame the oil companies for these leaks, but you will be blaming the wrong people.
