junior: It is just as easy to hack an indirect code as a direct code.

The most common type of barcode hacking is a hijack (or "barcode switching") which is placing a fake barcode on top of the original barcode. There is nothing Neustar can do to prevent this so their competitors could quickly respond by hijacking a Neustar code.
