"This significant announcement points to a new level of growth and acceptance of web conferencing applications and the on-demand delivery model within large-scale organizations," said Robert Mahowald, manager at research firm IDC. "The agreement with a major entity like the DoD is a key accomplishment for WebEx, and strengthens the position of web conferencing as a keystone in the foundation of real-time collaboration in enterprise organizations."

DISA conducted a year-long competitive review that included both on-demand and on-premise web conferencing providers. The extensive review process and pilot deployment covered four key areas: security, collaboration and capacity, integration and implementation, and administrative reporting and control. WebEx delivers all its services over the WebEx MediaTone Network, a global network specifically designed for secure, real-time web collaboration. With its broad range of data, voice and video conferencing capabilities, WebEx was able to meet extensive collaboration and capacity requirements with its commercially available solution. The MediaTone platform's standards-based APIs make it easy to integrate WebEx meeting capabilities into IM solutions, enterprise applications and business processes. WebEx's powerful administrative features and reporting capabilities allow the DoD to monitor, control and report on worldwide usage.

"The DoD selection is a historic milestone for WebEx, web meeting applications and the on-demand business model," said Bill Heil, president and chief operating officer of WebEx Communications.

As a combat support agency of the DoD, DISA is responsible for planning, engineering, acquiring, fielding, and supporting global net-centric solutions. The responsibilities of DISA are communications, joint command and control, defensive information operations, combat support computing, and joint interoperability support.

WebEx manages a global network which delivers a suite of on-demand web meeting applications including applications for web conferencing, web-based support, web-sales, remote training and online events. WebEx provides its services to corporations, technology companies and telecommunication providers worldwide. All of the WebEx services are built on the MediaTone(TM) communications platform and delivered through the WebEx MediaTone Network, the only global network specifically designed for secure web collaboration. MediaTone's unique information-switching technology allows the WebEx network to manage complex media types, deliver advanced communications functionality, and support a broad range of devices and platforms.
