Global Positioning System-enabled (GPS) mobile Location-Based Services (LBS) are on the verge of coming into their own, after years of frustrating delay. From 2005 to 2006 the numbers of mobile subscribers using LBS services in North America will more than double from 1.6 million to 3.9 million; by 2011 that number will grow to 52 million, which will account for 18% of the total mobile population in the region. This growth will be echoed in other regions, though to a lesser degree, and indeed, in Asia-Pacific the number of LBS users will be triple that of North America, reaching nearly 160 million.
