That's 2.5 million "short" and 2.1 million not "short".
I'm starting to think that "short" list is nothing more than a buy vs sell list where anything that is a "sell" ends up being listed as a "short".
I saw an explanation somewhere that basically said that it was something like this:
If you have Trader A buy a stock with NITE and Trader B sells a stock through ETrade at the bid, Etrade is the recorded MM for the transaction. Now when ETrade sells to NITE he's actually entering into a short transaction at that time because he's not transferring the shares at that time, he's actually issuing Air Shares to NITE and later "covers" when settling the transaction with the real shares from his client.
I don't have L2 at work but the few days I've asked before close it seems to follow pretty damn close that the "short" value on that list is the same as the "Sell" amount on L2.
Thus... I think that short list is totally useless for anything but seeing sells vs buys. I don't think it shows what many people think it shows.
