Rep. Harry Teague
With recent world-wide developments and even our own oil troubles here at home, many have started taking a harder look at green energy. One of the most promising forms of green energy out there is the energy produced from algae. In a letter in the Politico last week, Representative Harry Teague wrote very positively about algae-based fuels. He includes a little bit of background from his own life in the article: He has been an oil man for more than 30 years.
But the more people I talked to about solutions for America’s energy future, the more I kept hearing the same answers: stable, affordable prices; reduced dependence on foreign oil; fuels that are good for the environment; and energy jobs right here in America.
- Rep. Harry Teague
He says that even though there are a number of promising technologies emerging in the green energy field, algae-based energy is the only source that can meet all four of these needs. According to Teague, the primary holdup for this technology is Congress itself. The tax code provides incentives for cellulosic biofuel production, but not for other advanced technologies such as algae. Another area of delay is the “renewable fuel standard” which mandates that, by 2022, a large portion of the U. S. fuel demand must be satisfied by cellulosic fuel. Once again, algae does not qualify.
Representative Teague and Senator Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) have introduced legislation that would put an end to this “discrimination” of sorts against algae and any other advanced green biofuel to level the playing field. Such legislation, if enacted, would untie the hands of would-be investors to allow them to invest in advanced green technologies unavailable to them currently.
Biocentric Energy (BEHL) is a leader in the algae-based renewable energy field and could stand to gain significantly from such legislation. From their website:
BioCentric Energy Holdings Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the discovery and development of renewable energy projects in the United States and internationally. It manufactures and sells closed loop algae bioreactor systems for commercialization and production of algae. The company sells and builds the Algae Pro Photobioreactor, that could capture C02, NOX, and other emissions from smokestacks and optimize its utilization in the algae cultivation system, oil extraction, electrical generation, and biofuel refining technology. It also facilitates representation of buyers and sellers of organic oils for the production of biodiesel and the wholesale of EN/ASTM spec biodiesel. BioCentric Energy Holdings offers its products and services through licensed value added resellers and in-house representatives. The company was formerly known as Auto Max Group Holdings, Inc. and changed its name to BioCentric Energy Holdings Inc. in October 2008. BioCentric Energy Holdings Inc. was founded in 2006 and is based in Huntington Beach, California.
